Before anything even happened, we had talked about it. I used to be really against marriage, but I've warmed up to the idea. One night, we were just hanging out in my room, and he asked if he ever gave me a circle (a ring), would I say yes. I nodded, and we hugged for a long time. After that, I'd occasionally see rings online that I thought were pretty and email him the links. I figured he would wait a while.

Fast forward to December 2009. We were all shopping for presents for the other team for Battle Christmas. You're thinking, "What the hell is Battle Christmas?" It's our group of friends' day near regular Christmas, where we all gather in Ray's basement, also known as the Batcave, and exchange presents. Only we've selected teams back in November and have been working together to get awesome gifts for everyone.

One day we were in Roosevelt Field Mall. I wanted to get to FYE to get this fuzzy Kingdom Hearts blanket for John, so I didn't mind John and Katie going off by themselves. I believe I ended up following Tom and Ray to FYE. I didn't know at the time, but they were off picking out a ring.

A few days before Battle Christmas, we were arguing about something, or I was just upset. I just remember not being happy. I was sitting on his bed, the top bunk, and he was leaning over when a little white box fell out his pocket. I went to grab it to take a closer look, but he took it back, saying "That's not for you." I didn't think much of it, since I was upset, and he seemed grumpy. Then I believe we went to Taco Bell with Katie, Ray, and a few other people (we would.)

Battle Christmas night. I originally showed up in a shirt, skirt, and Christmas hat, but changed into my kimono. It was supposed to be part of a present for Andres, but we never bought the brownies. It took a while, but we finally gave out all the presents, the last one being Ray's emergency pirate chest of party supplies. We passed out some candy cane shot glasses and other sweets because who doesn't like candy? I was eating a chocolate, and went throw out the wrapper. Turned around, and saw John on the floor with a ring. I really don't know if I said yes or nodded, but he hugged me, and brought me over toward the laundry room. Next thing I know, everyone's around congradulating us.

After that, I did what else, but post on livejournal about it then stared at my ring, while everyone else attacked Ingg with fingerpaints.

And if the story isn't enough, here's the video Katie recorded.

I fail at summarizing things, so prepare for the long explanation. Alright, so apparently we were in the same Spanish class when I was in eighth grade and he was in ninth. We sat on opposite sides of the room, though, and never talked. I just remember thinking it was weird that Ms. Wade would call him “Mr. Wood.”

Then when we were both at Central High, we ended up re-meeting in photography class when we sat at the same table. It wasn’t an immediate “love at first sight” kind of thing, but I did begin to like him pretty quickly. He seemed really nice, and I was glad when he would talk to me. I would wave to him when he arrived, since I usually got there first. Once when we had a sub, he made an origami frog that hopped across the table. When he wasn’t looking at the end of class, I snatched it and stuffed it in my bag. At Christmas, I gave him a little bag of Lindt dark chocolate as a “thank-you” present for noticing me, a Shy Guy Girl. Thanks for talking to me, and being nice, even though you barely know me.

When class reached its end, we hugged for the first time. Throughout the rest of that semester, we saw each other occasionally, had brief greetings before moving on. I remember him liking my penguin gloves, and taking a photo of them with his phone. I figured he was going to be one of those friends - the ones that aren’t really friends per se, but you see them around and have awkward hellos and small conversations. But I was okay with this. At least he remembered me, and that was enough.

Then he somehow became friends with Katie. I always forget how they met, but he eventually asked her if she knew me, and she said I was her best friend. What luck! On the last day of classes, a big group of us got together to get bubble tea. After getting our drinks, he and I hugged on the floor of Little Nest, since we figured we wouldn’t see each other again during the summer. (Side note: Little Nest was a bubble tea place. It unfortunately closed. Had the best bubble tea ever.) It must’ve lasted at least a minute, as compared to the average couple-second long hugs I normally give out. Oddly enough, we ended up hanging out again during finals week. He, Katie, some of their friends, and I went to Green Acres Mall. When everyone but the three of us dispersed, we went to Shaw Avenue, the elementary school Katie and I attended. There, we fooled around on the playground, going on the slide, and getting bits of green and black stuck to us.

That was just the start. We got together a bunch of times after until he had to go to his dad’s house for two weeks. While there, he and I talked on AIM every night until late. Katie got me to talk on the phone with him once, while we were waiting for the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I was even worse with phones then, so I was nervous as hell, but excited to hear him. When he finally returned, we had our first “date.” While talking, we planned on watching the Hellsing anime together. We did, plus one. One of friends was there with us, and I ended up feeling sick, so I left early. Another big moment was when we sort of chose our song. I don’t exactly remember all the details, but we ended up snuggling up next to each other on the sidewalk, and listening to "Holland, 1945" by Neutral Milk Hotel on his PSP. Katie took a photo, while Chris made a hand-heart around us. Even before we confessed, that song ended up being special to us, and I felt that warm feeling I couldn’t quite place yet.

July 27, 2007. Not really a special day at first. Katie called me up, saying either John or I “had to grow a pair” and tell each other how we felt. I knew he liked me. We were already acting like a couple, sans kissing and all that, but I was scared. What if I was just delusional? Only one other guy had expressed interest in me, and I found out he was a total jerk when I got my head out of the clouds. What if I told him I liked him and that ruined everything? While at Katie’s, we talked to him on AIM. He told us he had an “epic tale” to tell us, and we went to meet him at 7-11. At one point later on, we were left alone, and I asked about the “tale,” but we ended up joking around the subject. It finally came out on the way back to Katie’s house. Schimmy was driving, with John and I in the front seat, and Katie and Chris in the back. I was sitting on John’s lap, as we heard Katie and Chris mention “epic tales” over and over. Then it happened. And apparently, I took forever to reply. I guess I was shocked. The phrase was mentioned again, to which he replied, “I said it, alright!” As we pulled up to the house, I got out, and leaned over to kiss him on the cheek. I failed, and got his lips instead. Our first kiss because I couldn’t get my head to turn the right way. Nevertheless, we were excited as hell. Katie and I jumped around and squeed because holy crap, this was real.

If you’re wondering about the other part of the title, one day, he mentioned how someone said he looked like a koala. I told him how I could see that. Koalas are adorable, and so is he. And so started my collection of stuffed koalas. Haha.

We aren’t going to be one of those crazy couples that need you to be matchy-matchy (ex: “Here’s the specific dress, shoes, and hair you need to have OR ELSE. BRIDEZILLA RAGE!”) All we’d like is if you attempt to go along with the theme: autumn oddities. Clothing and accessories should be autumn-coloured (reds, orange, bronze, gold, greens, browns.) Think of the shades! Try not to go for a light green that would go better in spring, or whatever else sort of seems out of season. If you're concerned, feel free to check with us.

Please wear dresses that are around knee or tea length. With suit jackets and collared shirts, please wear ties. We also encourage the following cranial accessories: top hats, fedoras, bowlers, pillboxes, cloche, fascinators, or headbands.

Now here’s where the fun comes in: somewhere in your outfit, incorporate something silly. Some vibes you can go for are: nerdy, geeky, steampunk, goth, vintage, or retro. It can be a necklace, earrings, cufflinks, tie, socks, hat - whatever. We want one silly part of why we love you out there. Other than that, you don’t have to get something that specifically marketed for bridesmaids, groomsmen, or a wedding. Just get anything interesting and comfortable that’s sort of dressy. Plus, it’ll probably end up being more affordable, and you'll be able to reuse it. That's always a plus :D

For the guests, if you want to go along with this, too, go right ahead. It’ll be fun. Extra formal attire isn’t necessary, but if that’s what you like, please go all out :)

Here are some sites that may help you out:

-ArchieMcPhee.com - Accessories - Similar to ThinkGeek, but a lot more random. They also have those weird bacon flavoured products, like gum and mints. Not as tasty as you’d think.

-The Blonde Swan Hat Boutique - Accessories - Hats in the following categories: fantasy, pirate, renaissance, steampunk, and victorian.

-DadsHats.com - Accessories - Sells many fedoras and bowlers.

-Dessy.com - Clothing and Accessories - It has tons of pretty bridesmaids dresses that aren't too long in a variety of colours. There are also flats that look comfy, if you need something to switch into.

-DraculaClothing.com - Clothing and Accessories - Lots of corsets and pocket watches.

-Etsy.com - Accessories - Sort of like ebay, but with lots of handmade oddities. It may take some searching, but there are lots of beautiful, as well as weird, items on here.

-GentlemansEmporium.com - Clothing and Accessories - It has pocket watches, walking sticks/canes, and really nice men's outfits. There are also women's clothes, but I like their hats the most. The bonnets are awesome.

-Kambriel.com - Clothing and Accessories - Goth clothing for girls and guys. I really love the vests they have for guys. So awesome.

-ModCloth.com - Clothing and Accessories - Has sort of an indie-vibe.

-OffbeatBride.com - Inspiration - Check out other non-traditional couples ideas there. The creator of the site’s book is worth a read, as well.

-SockDreams.com - Accessories - For those of you who need some interesting socks for the big day. Tights and stockings are also sold here.

-ThinkGeek.com - Accessories - I love this site. It sells fun toys, clothes, jewelry, and randomness.

-Unique-Vintage.com - Clothing and Accessories - A little on the expensive side, but sells gorgeous items that look like they’re out of another decade. They ship from California, I believe.

This list will continue to be updated as we find more cool sites :D

So who are you anyway? - Well, we’re John (20) and Jenn (20.) We currently live on Long Island in New York. He’s into cooking and playing guitar, while I take photos and read books. We both have dark hair - his curly, mine straight. He’s tan, and I’m pale. His family is huge, and mine... not so much. We like snuggling, wandering around town, going on adventures, and making food. He makes the meals, while I like getting out the box mixes of cupcakes. Our friends are a bunch of nerds and oddballs, and we love them. We spend a lot of time watching them play games, like Blazblue, Street Fighter, and Call of Duty. There are tons of trips to the Taco Bell in the next town over.

How’d you meet? - In high school, and sort of through a mutual friend. Go here for the long version.

How long have you been together? - We got together on July 27, 2007, so it’s been over three years.

When’d you get engaged? - December 29, 2009. Yeah, it’s going to be a long engagement. We’re aware of that.

When and where is the wedding? - It’s most likely going to be on either September or October 27, 2012. The ceremony will take place in a park, while the location of reception remains unknown for now.

Aren’t you guys a little young to be getting married? - Maybe, maybe not. We’ve been together for a long time, and we still love each other. Why wouldn’t we want to have celebration about it? We’re really happy to take this step, and eventually get a home together.

Hey, why aren’t you [insert typical wedding event/attire/etc.]? - We don’t find it necessary to go along with certain things just because they are traditional to everyone else. If they aren’t going to make us happy, or are only going to cause extra stress, why bother? We aren’t religious, so having a ceremony involving someone from any religion isn’t going mean anything to us. By having a good friend marry us, it’s so much more special. Jenn will have a bridesman because he’s an awesome friend that she’s known for years, and wants him on her side. The wedding party is not going to match because letting each person choose their outfit lowers the stress level for all involved, as well as makes future photos more interesting and fun to see. We will probably walk down the aisle together. It will flow with the rest of the pairs of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Our song, “Holland, 1945 by Neutral Milk Hotel, is much more meaningful to us than the typical wedding march. Yes, it is not a love song. It mentions a girl being “buried alive, one evening, 1945.” When we listened to that, ages ago, it was one of first moments where we connected, regardless of what the song is about.

Can I bring [insert name here]? - Probably not. As much as we would like everyone to be there, we have a limited budget and can only feed a certain amount of people.

Why are you having a game room at the reception? - Not everyone likes to dance (the bride included.) By having another option, we’re hoping more people can enjoy themselves.

Is there anywhere we can leave our kids? - Ideally, we’d like to have a kids room, where there will be things like a television, easier board games, kiddie video games, colouring books, and crayons. That is our idea right now, but we'll update with what we're definitely doing.

Will there be alcohol? - Most likely. Please be responsible and know your limits :)

What are the available non-alcoholic drinks? - We're hoping for coffee, tea, sodas, juices, lemonade, ice tea, and water.

What kinds of food will be there? - The buffet will hopefully include: salad, soup, beans, rice, sushi, tempura, steak, shrimp, grilled chicken, pulled pork, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. For the kids, there will also be pizza, grilled cheese, hot dogs, and chicken nuggets. Dessert will include: eclairs, fruit salad, ice cream, cheesecake, and jello. Besides that, there will be the cake. The snacks later on are a surprise.

Random, but what's up with the rocks icon? - That's Cancer Rock and Prima, his girlfriend. John found Cancer Rock at Nassau with Tom, and I'm not really sure where I found Prima, my pebble. At the moment, Prima's whereabouts are sadly unknown.

I have another question that isn’t listed here. How can I ask you? - Just go to the bottom of the page, and comment us. Please include your name. If that bothers you for one reason or another, just email us. Thanks.
